A lot of my students have their biggest breakthroughs when I’m able to break down the why behind their thought processes. I really take my time getting to know them so I can take an accurate stab at where they lost themselves.
We usually tend to lose our footing after a traumatic event that occured that we pushed to the back of our memory. Or maybe the physical environment you grew up in taught you that people can’t be trusted, as an example.
Regardless of where it began, these experiences can cause us to look at life with a dirty lens projecting our past onto the present, preventing us from living in the moment. In psychology, we call these cognitive distortions.
A cognitive distortion is an exaggerated or irrational thought pattern involved in the onset or perpetuation of psychopathological states, such as depression and anxiety.
I want to share some of the most common cognitive distortions, but you can watch this video if you’re more of an auditory learner.
1) Catastrophizing: This is when we get into the habit of magnifying or minimizing situations. This might show up for you as telling yourself that something “is no big deal” while you’re raging on the inside. Or the opposite may be true where you often find yourself feeling bad for blowing things out of control. This thought process makes it hard for us to roll with the punches and not get weighed down by stressful decisions.
2) All or Nothing Mindset: This is also known as polarizing thoughts where all situations and experiences are either bad or good with no inbetween. This thought process can get in our way because we’ll view minor failures as a sign to throw the towel in.
3) Should Statements: These are the beliefs that we hold that we should be further along or we should already know that or we should be an expert already. The problem with these statements is they’re often based on what society wants for us and cause us to put unrealistic pressure on ourselves and journey.
To cancel these beliefs you have to go deeper than surface level self-care, affirmations and journalling.
Creating a lasting shift will require you to face the parts of yourself that make you a little bit uncomfortable.
But that’s where lasting transformation begins.
